History : Department of Veterinary Anatomy

HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENT OF VETERINARY ANATOMY, UNIVERSITY OF IBADAN.

The Department of Veterinary Anatomy was first established as the Department of Veterinary Anatomy and Physiology in 1963 with assistance of funds from the Rockefeller Foundation. The department, during the establishment phase, had considerable support from the other departments in the Faculty of Agriculture, Forestry and Veterinary Science as well as in the Faculty of Medicine. Teaching and research are now being focused in the fields of gross anatomy, histology, and embryology. An introductory course is also given with the assistance of the Department of Veterinary Physiology and Pharmacology to first year agricultural students.

Research areas in the department include: Skin Biology; Reproductive and Endocrine Biology; and Comparative Anatomy, Environmental Toxicology and Lipid Metabolism in Farm and Laboratory Animals. The department offers pre-clinical training for the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) programme.
