Welcome to the Department of Veterinary Public Health and Preventive Medicine University of Ibadan, Ibadan, Nigeria- A focus for excellence in health and wealthof livestock and people.
The Department has three academic units viz, Public Health, Preventive Medicine and Aquatic and Wildlife Medicine.
The department as a core clinical department in the service of Veterinary Teaching Hospital provides clinical training for veterinary students and services to the community in the areas of food safety, pest control, zoonoses control and other preventive medicine activities. Ambulatory clinical services are provided to livesttock farms, zoological gardens and fish ponds.
Multidisciplinary research in areas of epizootiology, disease surveillance, immunology, zoonoses, food safety, veterinary econmics and extension, environmental health, control and preventive medicine, diseases of aquatic animals and wildlife medicine.
Postgraduate programme was introduced in the department in 1976. Currently, the department run postgraduate courses for three Masters degrees; viz Master of Veterinary Public Health (MVPH), Master of Preventive Veterinary Medicine (MPVM) and Master of Science in Epizootiology. Successful candidates in the masters examination may continue their studies which may lead to the award of Master of Philosophy (M.phil) and/or Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) degrees in their areas of specialisations.
In collaboration with the Department of Epidemiology and Medical Statistics, the Department operates a Master of Public Health (MPH) Veterinary Track under the auscipicies of the Nigerian Field Epidemiology and Laboratory Programme (NFELTP). The NFELTP programme is sposored by the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Atlanta, USA, Federal Ministries of Health and Agriculture.
The Department also hosts the Public Health and Preventive Medicine specialty of the Postgraduate College of Veterinary Surgeons Nigeria owned by the Veterinary Council of Nigeria.
