Professor James O Olopade DVM, PhD, FCVSN

Professor James Olukayode OLOPADE an indigene of Ibadan was born in Lagos, Nigeria on the 21st May, 1971. He attended Lantana Day Nursery and Command Children School both in Lagos before attending Command Secondary School Ibadan. He was admitted into University of Ibadan in 1986 to study Veterinary Medicine and graduated with the DVM degree in 1992. After the compulsory national service in Maiduguri, Borno State, he worked as private home Veterinarian, in private practice and went through a discipleship training before joining the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine as a Lecturer II in Veterinary Anatomy in 1999. He obtained his MSc and PhD in 2003 and 2006 respectively. Olopade was promoted Lecturer I in 2003 and Senior Lecturer in 2006 and Professor in 2011.



He was awarded Best Lecturer (Pre-Clinical) Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Veterinary Medical Students in 2000, 2002, 2010, 2017. He has received numerous scientific awards including Society for Neuroscience Fellowship to attend Marine Biology Laboratory Neurobiology Course, Woodshole, USA in 2007, the University of Ibadan Postgraduate School award for publications from PhD thesis in 2007 and 2008, and the International Brain Research Organisation Research Fellowship to Pennsylvania State University, USA in 2008. He was also awarded MacArthur Overseas Trainings Grant Fellowship and Alexander von Humboldt Fellow, both to University of Wurzburg, Germany from 2010 to 2011 and also obtained the Grass Fellowship to Marine Biology Laboratory in 2013

He has obtained numerous copyrights in the academic research including the discovery of a depression in the skull of Goats in Nigeria called “Caudofrontal Depression of Olopade”



Prof Olopade was the Editor in Chief, Nigerian Veterinary Journal from 2011-2015, and Head of Department of Veterinary Anatomy from 2014 till 2017. He was an invited Speaker African Academy of Science Workshop on Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine in 2016. He was elected President, Society of Neuroscientists of Africa and the Dean, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Ibadan, Nigeria both in 2017



Prof Olopade’s research areas are Neuroscience and Comparative Anatomy. He has been funded by the International Society of Neurochemistry, International Brain Research Organisation, Alexander von Humboldt, Tertiary Education Trust Fund and UI Research Foundation and has over 80 publications to his credit
