Curriculum for undergraduate and postgraduate programmes
The curricula from these departments are geared towards training Doctors of Veterinary Medicine at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels who are capable of undertaking:
 Training of the next generation in the fields of Veterinary Pharmacology, Toxicology, Physiology and Biochemistry
 Cutting edge research in Drug discovery and development, Pharmacokinetics, Drug monitoring in biological systems, pharmaceutical product evaluation and standardization, Monitoring and regulation of Environmental contamination and pollution
 National and international monitoring of drug and chemical residues in products from food animals
 Drug and chemical regulation and monitoring through national and international agencies saddled with this responsibility of quality assurance
These goals are achieved through our curricula which cover the aspects of:
Principles of Pharmacology and Toxicology
Systemic Pharmacology
Biochemistry of drug and chemical metabolism in animals
General and Advanced Toxicology
Drug discovery and development from medicinal plant, mineral and biological sources
Drug and chemical residue monitoring and evaluation in biological systems and the ecosystem
Courses offered in our undergraduate and postgraduate programmes include:

Undergraduate Programme
 VPC I: General Pharmacology – History and basic principles of Veterinary Pharmacology and Toxicology including drug forms, excretion, mechanisms of action and drug quantization. General pharmacology of the autonomic and central nervous systems
 VPC II: Systemic Pharmacology – Drug action on digestive, renal, cardiovascular, endocrine, reproductive and respiratory systems of animals. Principles of hypersensitivity, histamines, serotonin, prostaglandins and related drugs. Anti-inflammatory drugs
 VPC III: Chemotherapy – A study of chemotherapeutic agents including anti-protozoan, anti-cancer drugs, anthelmintics, antiseptics, disinfectants, vitamins and immune-therapeutic drugs.
 VPC IV: Veterinary Toxicology – General principles of toxicology. Toxicology of heavy metals, poisonous plants, toxins, nitrates, cyanides and environmental poison. Toxicological antidotes and clinical usages.
 VPC V: Veterinary Pharmacy -Principles of drug compounding, measurements, formulation and monitoring in biological systems. Therapeutic strategies, choice of drugs and monitoring of therapeutic responses. Organization of Veterinary Pharmacy and inventory in a Veterinary hospital
